What is aquamation?
Aquamation, also called water-cremation, is a sustainable form of cremation that mimics the naturally occurring process in nature when an animal passes. With the reduction of fossil fuels, water-based cremation achieves a remarkable 90% energy savings in comparison to traditional cremation methods. As a more gentle method, there are no direct emissions of harmful greenhouse gasses and the process yields 20% more 'ash' that are lighter in color and fine like sand.
The technology is called alkaline-hydrolysis and was first used in the late 1800's on many farms. Within the last 20+ years aquamation services can be found all around the United States and Canada for humans and their pet companions. Aquamation is part of the growing green funeral movement and has been adopted by many teaching universities and scientific communities. The first pet facility was opened in 2007, and the first funeral home to use the technology was in 2011.
Is aquamation safe?
Much like fire-based cremation, the residual bone mineral (or ash) produced through the aquamation process is not only environmentally friendly but also safe for handling. In fact, the bones are completely pathogen and disease-free regardless of the medications or medical procedures endured by your pet companion. The remaining by-product of the aquamation process is ecologically sound as it is made up of nutrients, amino acids and sugars.
The ash remains can be safely kept in a vessel of your choice or distributed in your pet companion's favorite spot.
What will I receive back?
If you opt for the individual service, you will receive the remains of only your pet companion placed in a sustainably made wooden urn. Also included is their one of a kind digital paw print emailed to you with exact measurements, accompanied by an embossed signed certificate of aquamation delivered in your Earth Human Pet Kind forever tote.
What is the Green Funeral Movement?
The green funeral or burial movement is a movement dedicated to any technology in death care that avoids using non-biodegradable materials and promotes natural decomposition.
Are there other aquamation facilities in MA?
Yes. Pawsitive Memories in Cape Cod serving south of Boston, Norfolk, Bristol, Barnstable counties and the islands. A facility will be opening soon in Chicopee to serve Western, MA.
Why the name Petrichor?
The word petrichor describes the earthy, fresh aroma that arises when the rain falls on the earth that many of us love.
Just like petrichor, our cherished pet companions leave behind a unique and lasting impression on our lives. Their presence is a warm, comforting memory that lingers in our hearts long after they're gone. And, remarkably, the smell of petrichor can serve as a gentle reminder of these beloved companions that can instantly reconnect us to nature’s beauty and rejuvenation.
In 2016, our favorite band, Phish, released the song, Petrichor. The song weaves together beautiful instrumental arrangements with lyrics that invoke a call to action to protect the environment.
Our desire when shifting to our encore career was to make a positive change while holding true to what brings us joy; our love for our pet companions and the power of live music. These elements laid the foundation for Petrichor Aquamation.
Petrichor is nature's way of telling us that life continues, that memories endure, and that our pet companions, in their own special way, are forever intertwined with the collective beauty of the world around us.

She is dearly missed. Shannon and her assistant couldn't have been more compassionate and kind when we brought our Brynnie to them. I would recommend their business 100%.Posted on Google Cristina RoseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My gratitude goes out to Shannon, Joe and Kayla. My family traveled 3 hours to Petrichor so we could receive the personal care that comes with their small scale end of life service. We were able to be present with my beloved animal companion’s body with a funeral on site in their comfortable and home-like family room. We were able to be with her body until the final moment and then received personal updates on every step of the process. The caring and compassionate end of life service they provided gave me peace of mind while fulfilling my promise to my dog, to take care of her body after she left. Petrichor aquamation is a true gift during a devastating yet sacred moment. This is the place for you if you want an intentional and personal experience where you can remain with your animal’s body until the last moment and have peace of mind that your companion’s body and remains are being cared for with the highest standards of respect, gentleness and compassion.Posted on Google Megan WilletteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Losing a beloved dog is one of the hardest things I've ever gone through, and I can't say enough about how compassionate and caring the team was throughout the entire process. From the very beginning, they were incredibly thoughtful, responsive, and easy to work with. Every interaction was handled with kindness, empathy, and genuine respect—not only for me, but for my dog as well. During such an emotional time, their care and professionalism made an immeasurable difference. I chose to have several keepsakes made, each piece is beautifully crafted and gives me a meaningful way to remember my best friend, colleague, and supporter. You can tell they take great pride in what they do and truly understand how important these memories are. I hope no one ever has to make this difficult decision, but if you do, I wholeheartedly recommend this team. They treated my dog with dignity, gave my family tremendous comfort, and created keepsakes that I will cherish forever. Thank you for helping us honor such a special member of our family.Posted on Google Matthew JohnsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thank you for helping Mithra and I. A lovely service that provided me with closure. Kayla is very helpful and kind.Posted on Google Lucille Bolster GrifoneTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had to have my Shadow euthanized on June 17th, there are not enough words to express how grateful I am for the care and compassion that was shown to Shadow, myself and John. Kalynn and Dr. Kim were amazing with all the love they showed for her. I only spoke with Shannon and Joe over the phone and there compassion was equally appreciated. Highly recommend Petrichor. During one of the hardest times for our family, you made the entire process comforting and respectful. The thoughtful keepsakes meant so much to us. We are truly grateful and highly recommend your services to anyone saying goodbye to a beloved pet.Posted on Google Rachel PondTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. While I was reluctant to write this review given the subject, I am presevering through my emotions due to the fact that Shannon and everyone at Peteichor deserves the recognition. Shannon was very kind through the whole process from our first call to date I picked up. This is one of the worst things anyone can go through and she herself understands and was comforting in our time of sorrow. I will always recommend Peteichor to anyone who is in need of their services.Posted on Google Brisa PortilloTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had our sweet girl cookie cremated here and the staff were caring and understanding. At first we were worried about how much it would cost for the service but they let us know that we were able to make separate payments which really helped us out. I just know our cookie wookie was in good hands.Posted on Google Elle HowTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Three weeks ago, I lost my little light and my sweet girl, Kiala. It was one of the hardest moments of my life, but the compassion and care we received from Petrichor Aquamation helped make an incredibly painful experience just a little more bearable. They were recommended by the veterinarian who performed Kiala’s at-home euthanasia, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that recommendation. I was told to expect about a two-week turnaround for her aquamation and keepsakes, so I was pleasantly surprised when everything was ready in just one week. Being able to bring her home sooner than expected meant the world to me. We were able to pick up Kiala on a weekend, which is such a rare convenience, and Shannon took the time to walk us through each of the keepsakes we had ordered. Both Joe and Shannon were incredibly kind, professional, compassionate, and genuinely caring throughout the entire process. Their communication was excellent, and I always felt like Kiala was being treated with the dignity and love she deserved. A few weeks later, we also received her digital paw print, which I deeply appreciate since I plan to use it for a future memorial tattoo. I can’t recommend Petrichor Aquamation highly enough. Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking, but knowing they are in such caring hands brings so much comfort. When the time eventually comes for Kiala’s brother Mason to cross the Rainbow Bridge (hopefully many years from now) I won’t hesitate to trust Petrichor with his care as well.Posted on Google Annie Jean-BaptisteTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
